Control over Senses - Bhagavad Gita

Control over the senses is also known as control over the indriyas. Indriya is a term of Pali and Sanskrit, which is used for physical strength or ability in general and for the senses more specifically.

There are some very eminent shlokas from The Bhagavad Gita which talk about the same.

Tani sarvani samyamya yukta mat-parah
Vase hi yasyendriyani tasya prajna pratishita
One who keeps a control on his senses and believes in fixing his consciousness upon lord, is well known as a man of stable intelligence. For this purpose he need to practice yoga and meditation and must be conscious of lord. One who believes and lord and is devoted to the personality of Godhead can have control over his senses.  If one has such control, then he can avoid quarrels and have more patience and positive outlook towards life.

Dhyayato visayan pumsah sangas tesupajayate
Sangat sanjayate kamah kamat krodho bhijayate
While contemplating the objects of the senses, people start developing attachment for them, with the extension of such attachment lust develops, and from lust anger emerges. One who isn’t lord conscious becomes subjected to materiel lust while examining the objects of the senses. All our senses require real commitments, which is the true transcendental service of lord and when they don’t get so, they seek engagement in materialism.  The only way of getting out of the perplexed material world is by believing in God and practicing yoga and meditation. Having a higher taste of spiritual enjoyment is the secret of control of senses and eventually the secret of success.

Krodhad bhavati sammohah sammohat smrti vibhramah
Smrti bhramsad buddhi naso buddhi nasat pranasyati
Anger gives birth to complete delusion and delusion begins bewilderment of memory. When the memory becomes skeptical, the loss of intelligence starts taking place and one fall down into the material world again. Those who do not indulge in the consciousness of lord and try to liberate them from material objects, they cannot attain the perfect stage of renunciation. Anger may create confusion in one’s mind and this confusion starts ruining the intelligence of that person which results in descending.

We have 5 sense organs, eyes to see, ears to listen, nose to smell, tongue to taste and skin to touch, whereas mind can see, listen, taste, smell, touch as it is the common sensory. Mind is the most powerful and multitasking organ, so control over the mind is necessary. Control over senses means control over mind which will ultimately result in supreme peace and infinite bliss.

The world is always pure and true, it's our mind that matters. Our mind is a beautiful place, it should not be an accumulation of doubts and fears, a control over senses is necessary.

Raneeta
